Fabulous Algebra 1 book for students, teachers, and tutors

First off, I am a tutor to many Algebra 1 students, including some who take algebra with me for h.s. credit in lieu of taking it at school. I am very familiar w/myriad algebra texts. This book is a jazzier version of the 1994 publishing by Stanley Smith under the Addison Wesley label (owned by the same publishing house as Prentice Hall). I wrote in my review of the 1994 book that my only suggestion would be to take out Chapters 14 & 15 on probability and trig, as they don't really belong in an Alg 1 book. Coincidentally, this book has done exactly that. Hooray! The font, colors, typography, and imagery are more eye-catching than the bland 1994 book, and there are fewer problems of the purely "drill, drill" variety. They've replaced some of those problems with more challenging application problems toward the end of each assignment, but there are still sufficient problems for assigning many practice & drill problems. In fact, most of the problems are exactly the same as in the 1994 text. Overall, it's a nice improvement over the older text. They made it more visually and otherwise interesting *without* sacrificing content, as so many algebra texts do. This alone sets it apart from the majority of US-published algebra texts out there. (I tend to agree with a former teacher of mine when he said that, in his experience, the quality of a text is inversely proportional to the number of pretty pictures in it.) :-) I will continue to refer my students to algebra texts authored by Stanley Smith.

Tutor Review: Perfect for students, parents & tutors

Prentice Hall has done a great job at presenting Algebra 1 to middle schoolers in this book. It is an easy to read and use as a guide for all of my students. Great book to improve and be ready for high school math. Great for anyone having trouble learning the basics, and a great addition for concept review for tutors.

Teachers can afford to buy books for students

This book was in perfect condition. I was able to buy it for a student that didn't have an Algebra book. It arrived very quickly, and his mom (not so much the student) was thrilled.

algebra 1 text

This was a great purchase for the quality and the price. I would definately recommend this item to anyone to buy.

It is what it is.

It is a high school Algebra 1 textbook, that's for sure. It has information, just like I would expect a textbook to have.

Great addition to your library

I got this book to review algebra before taking my next class and also used it when my textbook didn't quite explain something in easier terms. It is a good book to keep around whenever I feel the need to go back and review any operation needed for problem solving.

Great book.

Great book...I have 2 6th graders that i am tutoring, now using this book. It came as described...a little warn...a little scruffy...but still VERY CAPABLE at helping me achieve my goal. Building Scientist/Engineers/doctors/ at a time!

This is a good book but it has a few mistakes

This is a good book but it has a few mistakes. I'm learning and I'm capable of understanding the mistakes made and changing them to the correct number.

Algebra 1

This was a descent book but didn't show example that can inform you about the clumsy steps that people never do.

Five Stars

very easy to understand, My 6 grader is already half through the book.
