The Spectrum of Sexuality
By Rosemarybooth on Mar 03, 2011
The authors,Herman Roiphe,M.D. and Eleanor Galenson, M.D., establish a nursery which accommodates 8 or 9 toddlers at a time, plus their mothers, over a period of the second and third years of life. Observers are assigned to each mother-child pair. Special professional observers have a room behind one-way glass to observe sessions. Regular discussions are held to compare notes of observers re: play, communications, toileting, meals, interactions with other children and between mothers and children. Observations are made, largely Freudian, about the effects on the children when they observe sexual organs, their own and those of other children, having their diapers changed, or watching others use the toilet. Other observers make home visits to fill in the big picture of the home life of the children. Much is learned about the differences in parenting skills at home compared with at school. The authors reach conclusions about the normalcy, degrees of variation, and anticipated problematic sexual and behavioral development of the 66 children studied in this manner.
