Synopsis
Yates's fifth novel chronicles the decline of a mediocre and financially insolvent New England boarding school during the years of World War II. William Grove--son of divorced parents--undergoes a painful childhood made worse by the torments of the boarding school boy. Years later, as an adult, he looks back sadly on his childhood and on the Dorset School, and tries to forgive everyone involved, including himself.
