Synopsis
The O'Hara family and the Marine Corps are the two pivots for this posthumous novel by Leon Uris (1924-2003). Beginning with Civil War hero Paddy O'Hara, the story takes us from the battle of Bull Run to many years after the war, when Paddy, retired from the service, is the proprietor of a New York City saloon. In between, his son Zachary tries to live up to his father's legend as he too joins the Marines and then finds he must choose between the profession he loves and the needs of his wealthy and high-minded wife. Uris's "new" novel coincides with the 50th anniversary of his immensely popular novel 1953 BATTLE CRY, about Marines in World War II.

Fifty years after his novel Battle Cry took the world by storm, Leon Uris returns to his first inspiration -- the Marine Corps. In 1888, Zachary O'Hara, son of a legendary Marine, is the one man who can save the Corps. But there's a beautiful obstacle in his path -- Amanda Blanton Kerr, daughter of a ruthless industrialist -- that jeopardizes everything he's struggled to achieve.
Duty to country, love of family, and a tormented passion intertwine in this epic by international bestselling author Leon Uris.
Industry Reviews
"[P]assages of period description in Washington and research into the lives of Manhattan immigrants often stretch forth into a fine singing voice....Bloody battles well done, much excellent period writing...."
