Synopsis
A chance encounter at a beach party in 1974 marks the genesis of an enduring love triangle between three stage actors in this fictional memoir. As a result of his mother's suicide, Edward Day has some fairly severe psychological issues, though he finds that the pretense of theatrical performance enables him to keep his own problems safely contained. Day is at a party on the shores of New Jersey when he nearly drowns before being rescued by a fellow acting student named Guy Margate, to whom he bears a striking resemblance. In the close-knit world of New York theater, the two men become rivals for roles, and more importantly, for the heart of Madeleine Delavergne, a ravishing actress. All three of the central characters use theater as an escape, but they often find that they are performing as much for each other in their private lives as they do on the stage.

Industry Reviews
"[O]ne of the best novels I've ever read about the actor's psyche....THE CONFESSIONS OF EDWARD DAY might finally bring Martin the recognition she deserves....[It] has its deep pleasures, particularly in the ingenious way [she] probes the sensibility of an artist while using it as a prism through which to tell a tale."

"[C]hilling....Edward is [Martin's] most brilliant feat of literary ventriloquism to date. He's smart and self-knowing; good actors need to be both, and his shrewd commentaries on acting and theater...convince us that he is a very good actor. He's also self-centered and cold at the core."
