Synopsis
Rollie Zerbs is retired, and through an eccentric poetry project involving a souped-up typewriter and the fish of the Mississippi River, he has become La Porte, Missouri's most famous resident oddball. His grandson, Cooper, returns to La Porte to help him. Together, they attempt to sell a rare and antique baseball card so Rollie can get in-home care, and so Cooper and his high-school sweetheart, Charlotte, can revive an abandoned restaurant and bring some commerce into town. The two men and Charlotte journey to Chicago to a collectors' convention, where they are beset by not one, but several homicidal baseball-card collecting maniacs.

Industry Reviews
"A swift-flowing tale of low comedy and high jinks."
"Fanny Flagg meets W.P. Kinsella in Kiraly's...whimsical account of an eccentric midwestern family, their various predicaments, and the solution to these via a rare baseball card....Teetering at times on the brink of terminal cuteness, but, still, a charming and often funny tale."
(07/15/1995)
"Funny, utterly guileless, and extremely well-written...original characters...A book meant simply to be enjoyed."
"Kiraly captivates the reader with both his comic Midwest sensibility and an eye for small-town absurdities. 'Diminished Capacity' has it all: action, adventure, romance, and one amazingly preserved baseball card."
