Synopsis
Set in Guatemala, this is the adventure of a 12-year-old Mayan girl who has been kidnapped at an early age by a dangerous con man who forces her to travel with him while he pretends to be a blind beggar. Her "Uncle" tells her that her parents abandoned her, and visits to an Indian fortune teller convince him that she will somehow be the key to great wealth. She can't stop thinking about the lost parents that she can barely remember, and when "Uncle" decides to rob the church, she risks her life and tells the priest. Poetic descriptions of the jungles and villages of Guatemala and atmospheric cultural references enhance this tense, fast-paced thriller. COLIBRI is a 2004 American Library Association Notable Children's Book, a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year, a Booklist Editors' Choice, an IRA Notable Book for a Global Society, an NCSS-CBC Notable Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies, a Parents' Choice Award winner, and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. Kidnapped when she was very young by an unscrupulous man who has forced her to lie and beg to get money, a twelve-year-old Mayan girl endures an abusive life, always wishing she could return to the parents she can hardly remember.

Industry Reviews
"Tzunun is an entirely sympathetic narrator, her heartbreakingly ingenuous voice at turns describing modern-day rural Guatemala, and plumbing her own moral depths with complete believability. Readers will ache with her longing for love and her need to claim her own individual humanity. Painful, beautiful, and ultimately triumphant."
(07/01/2003)
"Achieving an almost hypnotic intensity, this taut novel invites readers to sample both savory and bitter flavors of Guatemalan culture as Cameron creates a melting pot of mixed values, religions and races, where both the pure and not-so-pure of heart have faith in a spirit world."
(07/21/2003)
"Cameron effectively articulates the point of view of a young girl who clings to her sense of self and origins despite a gulf of years, and her unassuming narration remains credible throughout in its perplexity and quiet rebellion."
(October 2003)
