Synopsis
A very old man and a very old woman live in a tidy little house that is surrounded by flowers. They should be happy, but they aren't because they are lonely. Hoping to cure this dilemma, the very old man goes off in search of a "sweet little fluffy cat" to keep him and his wife company. The very old man climbs hill after hill, and finally comes to a hill covered with felines. Unable to select just one, the very old man ends up bringing all the cats back home with him. However, as his wife points out, they don't have the means to care for so many pets--they can only keep one. When the very old man and the very old woman tell the cats to decide amongst themselves which one will become their pet, they inadvertently set off a huge, and quite dangerous, fight. Will the very old man and the very old woman end up with no cat at all? With the irresistible refrain "Hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats," this classic picture book is illustrated with B&W drawings. In print since it was first published in 1928 (prior to the existence of the Caldecott Medal), MILLIONS OF CATS is a 1929 Newbery Honor Book.
