FUN AND EDUCATIONAL FOR A HIGH SAT VERBAL SCORE, January 23rd 2004
Reviewer: Susan from Los Angeles, California
There are hundreds of books offering students help in getting ready for the SAT. Such books – the good ones, anyway -- can help students build the skills they need. However, they all suffer from one major problem – they are seriously boring.
Simon’s Saga for the SAT I Verbal takes a fresh approach. It attempts to make preparing for the test something that students will enjoy while it educates them about important ideas and issues in today’s world.
It works. Simon’s Saga teaches students 820 words that regularly appear on the SAT in a story about a group of college students that could be described as a science fiction romance. The author uses the “SAT” words naturally and reinforces them systematically with extensive exercises frequently through repetition. Students are introduced to a range of ideas and topics that appear on SAT reading passages. The author's style is lively and engaging, and students will appreciate the somewhat hip, irreverent tone.
The focus in Simon’s Saga is on content - vocabulary and ideas. This is where it should be. A poor vocabulary is the most common weakness of students, and the best way to expand vocabulary is to see how words are used in the type of writing that appears on the SAT. Ideally, students would read widely in preparation for the SAT verbal. However, the reality is that few students have the time to do this. Simon’s Saga is the next best thing to such a reading program.
Smart students looking for a fun and interesting way to gain what Simon, the main character, would probably call a “prodigious lexicon” to boost their SAT verbal score should check out this cool didactic tale.
