The diarist, Ellen, has married oil tycoon, John Rimbauer, a philandering and cold man who believes none of his wife's comments that strange things are happening in Rose Red. Explanatory notes written by the supposed editor and professor of paranormal studies, Joyce Reardon, accompany the diary entries.
