Synopsis
Susan Lowell, a Harvard professor, is getting ready to celebrate the Pulitzer Prize she won for her sympathetic portrayal of a Somali rebel named Hatashil when news reports claim that he and his men are responsible for a horrific massacre in a small African village. The backlash against Lowell is intense and immediate, with everyone from the government to her own students criticizing her and demanding that she return the prize. But a Harvard grad student named Michael Teak, who moonlights as an American intelligence agent, actually witnessed what happened in the village, and knows that the official reports are far from accurate. Unfortunately, as the only living witness to the atrocity, Teak finds that not only is he no longer an employee of the United States, but he is now being hunted as an enemy.

Industry Reviews
"McDonell's third novel...introduces a spy who could have easily walked off the pages of le Carre's better works....[Michael] Teak is the most attractive fictional spy in quite some time,...[and] one hopes this isn't [his] only appearance."
(04/13/2009)
"A novel more for the head than the heart, but so very intelligent that for a certain kind of reader it will be catnip." (starred review)
(06/15/2009)
"AN EXPENSIVE EDUCATION encompasses global, national, and campus politics, showing the way the biggest agendas are sometimes set on the smallest stages. McDonell writes about hot topics with a cool head, and his riveting novel should fuel an emotional response from readers." (starred review)
(07/01/2009)
"Tempered by some hilarious insider glimpses of Harvard life, AN EXPENSIVE EDUCATION is terrific, a thriller noir that's difficult to put down or forget."
(08/07/2009)
"McDonell is stingy with the action sequences, but when they come, they're swift and hot, showing us how Teak strikes, kills and subdues with awesome precision....AN EXPENSIVE EDUCATION...is nothing groundbreaking -- for McDonell or the spy-novel genre -- but it's smart and sexy and could be the beginning of a franchise more lucrative than literary fiction."
(08/12/2009)
"Half campus novel, half geopolitical thriller, AN EXPENSIVE EDUCATION proceeds at...[a fast] pace for 300 almost unerringly entertaining pages."
