About This Book:

Title: For the Love of Animals: The Rise of the Animal Protection Movement

Synopsis
Kathryn Shevelow presents a detailed history of the animal rights movement, the genesis of which she places in 18th-century England, which was by her accounts a hard time to have fur or feathers. Whimsical chapter titles such as "Of Duchesses and Ducks" and "Pets and the City" betray reports of vicious animal cruelty, including cockfighting, bull-running, and ruthless butchers. Demonstrating that there are perhaps some fates worse than the slaughterhouse, she also clarifies the origin of the term "bestiality." Balancing the brutality are heroic tales of historical figures such as Alexander Pope, William Hogarth, and Margaret Cavendish who vigorously protested such violence, thus becoming pioneers of PETA. Even though we are today more enlightened on issues of ethics and animals, the fact that many of the most barbaric customs that Shevelow depicts remain in practice adds even deeper resonance to this stirring history.

Industry Reviews
"[A] carefully constructed history, a sometimes shocking social narrative (veined with unexpected, though welcome, humor), and a heartfelt encomium to a once-radical movement's principles."
