Publisher Notes
Published to accompany a two-year traveling exhibition opening in March 1997 at the San Diego Museum of Art, this is the first book devoted to visionary American artist A. G. Rizzoli (1896-1981). The recent discovery of his elaborate architectural drawings, which have been described as "the find of the century," has belatedly brought Rizzoli the recognition he yearned for during his lifetime. He has been compared to Escher, Piranesi, and Blake, and his art has become avidly sought after. For nearly 40 years, Rizzoli worked as a draftsman for a San Francisco architect. In the evenings, he made the exquisite color ink drawings of his dream city and other visions that are reproduced here. Skyscrapers, Gothic cathedrals, the Duomo in Milan--reconfigured and often lit Hollywood-style with floodlights--were intended as architectural stand-ins for people known to the artist.A. G. Rizzoli finally introduces this astonishing master of outsider art to a wider audience. Essays about his life, analyses of his work and writings, and sources of his inspiration are provided by Jo Farb Hernandez, curator of the Rizzoli exhibition and former director of the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, John Beardsley, a writer and curator who has taught in the landscape architecture programs at Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere, and Roger Cardinal, professor of literary and visual studies at the University of Kent, Canterbury, England.
