This catalogue from an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in October, 1994, is the first study of landscape and architectural photographer Édouard Baldus. A central figure in early French photography, Baldus made his name with views of the monuments of Paris and the South of France, with dramatic landscapes of the Auvergne, and pictures of the construction of the new Louvre and of the floods of 1896. In his two railroad albums, Baldus intermixed his earlier architectural and scenic images with bold geometric views of the modern landscape to address the influence of technology.
