An aesthete and bon vivant with a contagious appetite for good living, Altenberg (his real name was Richard Engländer) counted among his enthusiasms postcard collecting and brothels. However, he also had a social conscience, which is reflected in the essays here about a group of Ashanti who were brought to Vienna as an exhibit at the local zoo--and with whom Altenberg made friends.
