About This Book:

Title: The Sound of Freedom: Marian Anderson, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Concert That Awakened America

Synopsis
The refusal by the Daughters of the American Revolution to allow black contralto singer Marian Anderson the opportunity to perform at Constitution Hall sparked a public fury in 1939. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the organization, and another--more public and symbolically profound--concert was arranged. On April 9, 1939, Anderson performed for a huge, integrated crowd in front of the Lincoln Memorial. In THE SOUND OF FREEDOM, civil rights historian Ray Arsenault recounts this historic event, contextualizing it in regards to the civil rights struggle in the 1930s and beyond.

Industry Reviews
"[I]n THE SOUND OF FREEDOM, Arsenault attempts to revive our interest in Anderson's feat by examining it in the context of a complex and often turbulent racial landscape. And he succeeds handily."
(07/05/2009)
"The author excels at contextualizing the concert, probing the ways in which Jim Crow laws and racial prejudices permeated all aspects of African-American life."
(03/15/2009)
"THE SOUND OF FREEDOM succeeds...because of the intrinsic buoyancy of Anderson's story..."
