From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-An overview of Sharpton's life that is full of what, when, where, and how, but has little of the why. Readers are informed that he was a devoted follower of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., the flamboyant Harlem minister and politician, and that he deeply admires soul singer James Brown. The book recaps several controversial causes with which Sharpton has been involved, including the Tawana Brawley case, the killing of Yusuf Hawkins, the death of Gavin Cato, and the Crown Heights racial riots. The facts are marshaled and trotted out, but even though he includes many quotes from Sharpton, Marcovitz provides little insight into the man behind the public persona and what makes him tick. Black-and-white photos are liberally sprinkled throughout.
