Editorial Reviews

Review
Thick black manuals published by Equine Research, Inc. are found on many horsemen's bookshelves. These reference books have formed the library foundation for professional horsemen in all areas of the equine world. Previous manuals have included "Feeding to Win," "Equine Genetics," and "Treatments & Medications." The newest, "Veterinary Manual for the Performance Horse," is the same comprehensive work that people have come to expect and rely upon. The 608 page book covers all aspects of caring for an equine athlete; from conformation and conditioning, to avoiding and diagnosing lameness, to use of medications and high-tech therapies. User friendly and filled with loads of photos and excellent comparison drawings, the "Veterinary Manual" will be an invaluable reference for horsemen. As with any book covering such a wide range of subjects, this manual does not go into great depth on every subject, but is extremely useful in refreshing your knowledge, allowing for a quick scan of options and choices, and providing a complete index and glossary of terms for fast reference. In the racing industry, many owners are not hands-on horsemen. But, like the previous reference books, the "Veterinary Manual" will prove extremely valuable in helping even the newest owners to better understand the choices and decisions being made concerning their care of the horses. The editors at Equine Research do a masterful job of keeping these books filled with essential information for the seasoned trainer and owner, while allowing the newcomer to get a solid grounding in these important areas of horsemanship. A must for your bookshelf. -- Brandy Adams Mitroff, Racing Northeast November 1994

Touching on most topics relating to the performance horse, Dr. Loving provides a good handbook for the horse owner. She devotes 40 pages to "performance feet" and includes the obvious areas of laminitis and navicular syndrome as well as shoes that are too small, hoof cracks and a few words on pads and wide-web shoes
