Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5?The third entry in the series takes Millie and her friends into the fourth grade where they have (horrors!) the obnoxious Miss Brennan again. Suddenly it looks as if the school year of 1947 isn't going to be as swell as Millie thought. Things go from bad to worse when a new girl joins the class and she and Sandy become friends, leaving Millie out. The jealous friend theme is presented as a problem to be solved, and the heroine tackles it with the help and advice of her caring and sensible mother and the faith that things will work out. The period details (a Shirley Temple film series, "Polly Pigtails" magazine) are interesting and unobtrusive. Give this to children who have finished Ramona, but are not quite ready for Betsy-Tacy. The best so far in this engaging and uncomplicated series.?Connie Parker, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland, OH

From Booklist
Gr. 2^-4. Millie Cooper enters fourth grade sure that it's going to be the best year ever, but she feels angry and hurt when her best friend, Sandy, seems to prefer a new girl in the class. Like Herman's other stories about Millie in Chicago in the 1940s, this chapter book evokes the period with affectionate detail, even as it dramatizes the universal longing for a true friend and the sadness of being left out. Millie's is a stable, comfy world. Though things shift a little, everyone ends up sitting together, enjoying a delicious cry at the latest Shirley Temple movie. Hazel Rochman
