Set in England during World War II, this continuation of Summers' Caldwell family saga focuses on Daisy Caldwell, who experiences all kinds of upheaval. When her mother dies, her family scatters. Sister Imogen joins the war effort; sister Elsie marries her young man; brother Baz decides to find himself on a fishing trawler; and Daisy and her little brother go to live with her aunt and uncle. Aiding her friend after a fall from a horse, Daisy, who always thought she'd be an entertainer like her mother, resolves to become a nurse instead and ends up seeing things no one so young should witness. Daisy comforts wounded soldiers, rides with an ambulance, and even takes part in the evacuation from Dunkirk. Battles rage internally, too, as Daisy struggles with the loss of friends and family, and Summers draws readers into the demanding life of a young woman who comes of age in an exceedingly difficult time.
