The author states that "whatever their genre, the picture books presented here will fly small children to other countries and introduce them to the diverse peoples and places of their world." The destinations are divided by continent and country, in alphabetical order. Brief descriptions of the books are followed by bibliographic information, but do not include ISBNs or suggested age or grade level. (The author explains that the age ranges indicated in book reviews often vary widely; therefore, specific ages are not noted.) Another point made by the author concerns inappropriate parts of the book. "Teachers, parents, and other adults can exercise choice over the books introduced. They can omit portions they find inappropriate, especially for the very young; explain and answer questions about the stories and the settings; reinforce the positive characteristics of the books." There are many better picture-book guides that provide more substance, additional information on illustrations, and activities that correlate with curriculum.
